A New Earth: awakening to your life’s purpose

I read A New Earth over a decade ago, and it rocked. my. world. I would read a few pages, lay the book down, and stare at the ceiling as my perspective of existence crumbled away. Seriously. I walked around in a daze for days after finishing this book. If you want a spiritual awakening- here ya go.

Eckhart Tolle wrote this book to shift consciousness and change the way people think. It is a self-help book in the most literal sense; instead of instructions he provides perspectives and allows the reader to grow and change through their own revelations. In his own words, “This book’s main purpose is not to add new information or beliefs to your mind or to try to convince you of anything, but to bring about a shift in consciousness, that is to say, to awaken. ”

Eckhart Tolle has a gift of taking complex metaphysical and spiritual concepts and simplifying them, making them accessible for your average reader.

You don’t even have to take my word for it; this book was heavily promoted by Queen Oprah herself. In a 10 part series, Oprah goes chapter-by-chapter discussing the book with Eckhart Tolle- available on her website for anyone with a TV service provider login.

6 quotes from “A New Earth”:

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.”

“You don’t have to wait for something “meaningful” to come into your life so that you can finally enjoy what you do. There is more meaning in joy than you will ever need. The “waiting to start living” syndrome is one of the most common delusions of the unconscious state.”

“Life isn’t as serious as my mind makes it out to be”

“Knowing yourself deeply has nothing to do with whatever ideas are floating around in your mind. Knowing yourself is to be rooted in Being, instead of lost in your mind.”

“Anything that you resent and strongly react to in another is also in you.”

“If the thought of lack – whether it be money, recognition, or love – has become part of who you think you are, you will always experience lack. Rather than acknowledge the good that is already in your life, all you see is lack.”

Try this at home:

“…Close your eyes for a moment and find out if there is life inside your hands. Don’t ask your mind…go to the hands directly. By this, I mean become aware of the subtle feeling of aliveness inside them. It is there. You just have to go there with your attention to notice it. You may get a slight tingling sensation at first, then a feeling of energy or aliveness. If you hold your attention in your hands for a while, the sense of aliveness will intensify…

Then go to your feet, keep your attention there for a minute or so, and begin to feel your hands and feet at the same time. Then incorporate other parts of the body–legs, arms, abdomen, chest, and so on–into that feeling until you are aware of the inner body as a global sense of aliveness.”
